From the Headmaster | Opening the gates of the School wider

As the School year progresses, there are many occasions on which we have opportunities to reflect with thankfulness on all that has taken place.

I recently had occasion to reflect on one particular initiative that has progressed over the last three years. Early in 2022, the School Council and the Foundation resolved to establish a Scholarship Trust. This initiative took place because of a conviction, a recognition, a concern, and a hunch.

Our conviction was that the opportunity of a Trinity education is transformative. Being immersed in our school community, and being provided with the breadth of opportunities calibrated around the appropriate levels of challenge and support, our boys benefit and grow in myriad ways. I take it that the ongoing commitment of families to enrol their sons is evidence that we believe in the value of a Trinity education.

Our recognition was that a Trinity education is expensive. It takes a lot of resources to do what we do. While most of our families make significant sacrifices to invest in a Trinity education, many more are entirely unable to do so.

Our concern was an outworking of the Christian foundation of the School. The God of the Bible calls us to look beyond our own needs to the needs of others. The generosity and kindness that he shows to us is the model of generosity and kindness that we are to show to others, particularly to those who are most in need of it.

Our hunch was that, within the extended Trinity Grammar School community, there are people with both the means and the desire to open the gates of the School to boys who would not otherwise be able to join us. We have been delighted to discover that our hunch was correct.

The establishment of the Scholarship Trust took place in the first half of 2022. Since that point, there have been more than two thousand unique donors who have contributed more than one million dollars to the Trust, mostly through our three annual Giving Days. Through the Trust’s endowment, reserves and the ongoing pledges of our donors, we now have seven fully-funded scholarship students in the Middle and Senior Schools in 2025.

For each one of these boys, a Trinity education presents a life-changing opportunity. Knowing the Foundation Scholars, I am delighted that they are making the most of the possibilities.

Returning to my starting point, I am very thankful for the support of the extended Trinity Grammar School community in the establishment of the Scholarship Trust. I trust that, as the year draws to its close, that you also have much for which you can be thankful.
